The world’s most endangered tribe lives in the eastern Amazon forest of Brazil. Their tribe name is the Awa-Guaja.

1.11.2

This tribe was pushed close to extinction due to European colonists who tried to enslave them and ranchers who stole land from them, which they needed so desperately to survive. Few have ever met this tribe of 350 members, 100 of which have never seen the outside world. What makes this tribe unique is their synergy with nature. Women of this tribe often breastfeed squirrels and monkeys as if they were their own children.

In addition to breastfeeding they also keep wild pigs, squirrels, parakeets and large rodents(WTF) known as agoutis as pets, their favorite pet are monkeys. Primates are an important source of food for the tribe, but they will not eat any of their pets. Even if the pets return to the wild they will be able to recognize it as hanima- or part of the family. This tribe is quite literally apart of nature.

Unfortunately, illegal loggers threaten the existence of the tribe for another 30 years. Over 450 members of the tribe have been murdered over a period of 2003-2010. In fact, a few years ago a Awa girl was burned alive for protesting the increased amount of logging happening in their territory. Tragedies like this should not have a place in our world.
